Brew Good, Do Good: Sustainable Coffee

EVERY CUP MORE SUSTAINABLE

At Carnival Coffee Roasters, we’re passionate about great coffee—but we also know that coffee production can have a big environmental impact. That’s why we’re committed to making our coffee as sustainable as possible, from the farms we work with to the way we roast, package, and deliver every bag.

Here’s how we’re reducing our footprint while keeping your coffee tasting incredible.

Sourcing Sustainable Coffee the Right Way

Coffee farming can either protect the environment or harm it, depending on how it’s done. We choose to work with farmers who focus on sustainability:

  •  Shade-grown coffee – Instead of clearing forests, many of our farmers grow coffee under natural tree canopies. This protects biodiversity, prevents soil erosion, and supports bird populations that naturally keep pests in check.
  • Regenerative farming – Some of our coffee comes from farms using composting, natural fertilisers, and crop rotation to maintain soil health and reduce chemical use.
  • Fair prices for farmers – Sustainable farming isn’t cheap, and we make sure the farmers we work with are paid well above Fairtrade prices so they can continue investing in environmentally friendly practices.

Reducing Our Roasting Footprint

Roasting coffee requires energy, but we make sure our process is as efficient and low-waste as possible. Our decision to roast using a Loring Coffee Roaster significantly cuts emissions while enhancing the flavour of our beans. The Loring utilises a single-burner design with a patented smokeless operation, reducing energy consumption by up to 80%. Read more about why we made the switch here.

  • Energy-efficient roasting – Our roasting methods are designed to minimise emissions while bringing out the best flavours in each bean.
  • Reducing waste – Every batch is carefully planned to avoid unnecessary waste, and leftover chaff (the thin skin of the coffee bean) is repurposed instead of discarded.

Sustainable Coffee Packaging

Traditional coffee bags are often lined with plastic and foil, making them hard to recycle. We’ve taken a different approach:

  •  Compostable coffee bags – Our bags break down naturally, so they don’t end up in landfill.
  • Recyclable mailers – We use packaging that can be easily recycled, cutting down on waste.
  • Minimal plastic – Wherever possible, we’ve removed plastic from our packaging and shipping materials.

Sustainable Delivery & Wholesale

Getting coffee from our roastery in South East London to your door shouldn’t cost the earth. That’s why we prioritise low-emission delivery methods—including emission-free cycle delivery for local orders. Read more about why it matters here.

  •  Carbon-conscious shipping – We work with delivery partners who offset emissions and prioritise sustainable logistics.
  • Reusable coffee drums for wholesale – Instead of single-use packaging, our wholesale customers receive coffee in reusable containers, cutting down on waste.

Brewing Sustainably at Home

Sustainability doesn’t stop once you receive your coffee—how you brew it matters too. Here are a few simple ways to make your coffee routine more eco-friendly:

  • Grind only what you need – This keeps your coffee fresh and reduces waste.
  • Compost your coffee grounds – Used coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen and make excellent compost for plants.
  • Choose reusable brewing methods – French presses, AeroPress, and pour-over systems with reusable filters create far less waste than single-use pods or paper filters.

Sustainability Is a Journey

We know there’s always more to do. That’s why we’re constantly looking for ways to improve, whether it’s through better sourcing, reducing emissions, or finding new sustainable materials.

By choosing Carnival Coffee, you’re supporting a coffee company that’s serious about sustainable coffee. And the best part? You don’t have to compromise on flavour to make a difference.
