Carnival Coffee Roasters 2022 round up

What a Carnival year it has been.  Thank you for keeping us doing what we love so much; sourcing, developing and sharing with you all delicious coffee for the third year running.

We are so super grateful every time our phone pings with your coffee order.  The lovely feedback you share with us after drinking Carnival Coffee Roaster's coffee always makes our day.

Relationship coffee

As you know; It is really important where possible to return to the same farmers and repeat buy their coffee, this enables the farmers to plan their harvest and financially plan too.

We were delighted to welcome back in 2022 new harvests of Luz Dary, Gallego Micro-lot, San Ramon, Rotutu, Sidamo, Bukonzo dream, Midnight Moon and of course our very own family coffee, La Familia.

We roasted and shared over 29 different coffees with you all in 2022 and roasted our first ever coffees from India and Thailand.

What was your favourite coffee in 2022? Our top drunk / sold coffee was San Ramon from Nicaragua followed closely behind by the lovely Sidamo from Ethiopia.

What coffees would you like to see back in 2023? Or which new origins would you like to try? Drop me a line at jayne@carnivalcoffee.co.uk

Emission free delivery in South East London

We do free cycle coffee delivery across South East London.  Richard, your friendly coffee cycle courier has cycled over 6,500 miles across & up and down South East London hills and through rain and shine in 2022.  We estimate this has saved 1.78 tonnes of CO2 van delivery emissions.

Planting trees

7,269 Mangrove trees were added to the Carnival Coffee Roaster Forest in Madagascar during 2022, thank you.

The forest now consists of a wonderful 18,000 trees.

By planting Mangroves through C-free  (our tree planting partner)  we can reinstate the soil stabilisation as well as improve the quality of the water that provides a natural habitat for fish and other rare sea creatures. Mangrove trees are also fantastic carbon sinks and (pound for pound) they remove four times more carbon than rainforests!  A decent income is also ensured for local villagers that pant the trees as well as importantly guaranteed income even on days where they cannot plant trees due to extreme weather.

Supporting local businesses and new cafés

We have been delighted to continue supporting local businesses on the set up of their new cafes and coffee bars in hotels and offices by providing full equipment and coffee solutions, barista training, coffee menus and recipes.

We have introduced reusable tubs cutting out packaging completely as an option for our wonderful wholesale partners.

Carnival Coffee Roasters have donated over £5k of financial and coffee donationsin 2022.

  • Spirit of Peace coffee fundraising campaign for Ukraine

Thank you for taking part in our fundraising campaign for Ukraine in the Spring of 22.  We covered the cost of coffee production of the Spirit of Peace co-operative coffee, packing and delivery and you kindly bought a bag of coffee with a 100% of proceeds being donated to  DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal | CARE (careinternational.org.uk).  Your donations helped provide food, water, hygiene kits, cash and wellbeing support.  In total the Spirit of Peace coffee raised an incredible £1,318.  We are so very grateful to the awesome Carnival community.

  • Partnering with our local food banks

In 2022 we commenced two very important Community partnerships.  We now donate over £100 worth of coffee a week to the cafes and clients at South Norwood Community Kitchen and Living Well food in Bromley.   Thank you for helping us support these vital local initiatives.

  • School and charity fundraising

We never turn down a raffle prize request in our local community.  We have been lucky enough to support local schools and their PTA initiatives through pop up coffee bars and subscription prizes.   Please get in touch with us if we can support your South East London School’s fundraising or local charity campaign with lovely Carnival Coffee.

A few other highlights from the year

We roasted, cycled, and delivered to your home, café and office a whopping 9 tonnes of delicious coffee.

It’s been a tough year financially for all businesses especially speciality coffee. With further increased pricing in shipping, packaging and well you name it, everything! Coffee is often traded in US dollars and the weak pound has added a significant rise to in our costs.  However, we have managed to keep sourcing the highest quality and most delicious coffee and hello 2023 let's see what you have in store for us!

Last year we expanded to a new roastery space and workshop just down the road near the Clock Tower in South Norwood. Pop in and see us 😊

We invested in a new piece of equipment to help us drastically reduce smoke, fine particles and CO2 created during the coffee bean roasting process.  Although don’t worry! You can still smell those delicious coffee aromas filling the air every time we roast.

We were lucky enough to take part in our first ever coffee festival in Kent and loved meeting all the visitors, taking part in workshops and competitions (Jayne got to the finals of the Kent tasters cup!) and meeting lots of new industry friends. We will be attending more events this year and look forward to taking Carnival on tour across the UK.

We were delighted to be included in Batchcoffee.co.uk list of top London Coffee roasters. If you are thinking of trying out a multiple coffee roaster subscription, check them out. Tom who runs batchcoffee.co.uk is super knowledgeable and will ensure you get top notch coffee from different roasters every month.

Thank you

We are delighted that the Carnival subscription club community continues to grow every month mainly through lovely club members telling their friends and family about the wonderful coffee they are drinking, thank you.

We finished the year with a wonderful collaboration with our chocolate friend William Curley bringing to you a wonderful festive coffee and praline chocolate tasting experience, look out for more delicious future collaborations.

A big thank you to all of you for drinking Carnival and the ace Carnival team.  Richard for cycling your coffee to your door.  Steve for roasting up some incredible coffee and creating mind-blowing roast profiles and improving the consistency of our coffee.  And the super lovely Rosie for bringing her beautiful illustrations to the Carnival coffees and merch, thank you.

2023

We have some exciting plans for 2023 including the arrival of a new roasting machine, (more on this later!).  It is the most environmentally friendly machine available in the world and will allow us to triple our capacity.

What would you like to see from us in 2023?  Leave a comment below and let’s make it happen.
